TWEED COAST DESIGN and DRAFTING
Houses and Residential Units
Top End and D.H.A.
Northern Australia or the “Top End” or “On Top” has its own set of design rules and requirements. Houses have to be designed and built to suit a hot, wet climate. This requires the use of large overhangs, flow-though ventilation, screens or plantings to reduce sun penetration, insulation in walls and roofs and large covered outdoor areas. The buildings also have to be designed to withstand winds of over 200Km/H. By putting some thought into these designs, they can be made quite habitable despite the harsh environments they are in.
These building are often in remote areas, so they must be easy to construct and maintain. They tend to be very simple in design and layout which is exactly what is need for construction, often prefabricated in a factory and sent to the site by truck or boat.

The Defence Housing of Australia which builds houses in Northern Australia and has its own set of rules and requirements. They specify minimum room sizes, minimum garage sizes, storage areas and verandahs. Houses have to be designed specifically to meet requirements. Fortunately these are very clearly set out and easy to follow.
